Volunteers from the Iceland Touring Association are setting up signposts along the popular Laugavegur hiking trail. The posts are intended to help travellers navigate the trail, and discourage people from wandering off the trail.

A total of 24 new signposts will be added along the 55 km (34 mi.) long trail. The signposts will show the distance to the next hiking cabins in either direction. The hike is usually completed in three to five days. The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that the volunteers have finished installing half the signposts, which are paid for by a local business.

Laugavegurinn connects the Central Highlands oasis Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk valley north of Eyjafjallajökull glacier in South Iceland. The route is renowned for its beauty, covering the whole spectrum of Iceland’s interior landscape compressed in one trip, taking you up and down beautiful desolate volcano hills, over bursting glacial rivers and clear blue water streams, alongside glaciers and rugged mountains, through lava fields, geothermal areas and green valleys.
