An opinion poll conducted for Fréttablaðið newspaper and Channel 2 news shows public support for whale hunting has dropped considerably during the past ten months.
23.6 percent of the sample population said they were rather or very opposed to whale hunting compared to 18.5 percent ten months ago. 45.5 percent support Iceland’s whale hunting as to 57.2 percent when the last poll was conducted ten months ago. 30.9 percent claimed to be neutral towards whaling.
Support is greater among individuals who voted for the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) and the Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn), the two right-winged parties now in government.
The Icelandic whaling company Hvalur ehf was granted a quota of 154 fin whale last year and is likely to be granted a similar quota this year. The whaling company caught a total of 134 fin whales in 2013. No animals were hunted in 2011 and 2012.
