An information sign has been placed at the start of the hiking trail up mount Esja by The Iceland Touring Association and ICE-SAR. Esja is popular among hikers, but recent accidents have prompted authorities to instruct people on how to safely approach the hike.
The sign, which is in Icelandic and English, advices hikers to wear good hiking boots, good clothing and to bring orienting equipment. Among things to keep in mind before hiking is to check the weather forecast, leave a travel plan with someone who can react if needed and not to hike alone.
