Helicopter service Norðurflug captured a fantastic video of the Holuhraun in beautiful weather on Thursday, December 4th. The HD video (see below) shows the crater covered in snow on the outside, with the red-orange lava lake bubbling fiendishly on the inside and forming a massive river when overflowing the crater's lower northeast ledge.
Baugur, the crater, is close to 100 meters (328 ft.) high and is at least 400 meters (1,312 ft.) long and 100 meters (328 ft.) wide. The new black lava field rises up through the snow that would, in normal circumstances, cover the whole area at this time of the year.
The ongoing eruption has been clearly visible in web cameras today.
According to the Icelandic Met Office over 80 earthquakes have been detected in Bárðarbunga caldera since 10.00 yesterday morning (Friday). The largest, M5.1, struck last night at 21.05 (9.05pm) in the southeastern caldera rim.
