A new mountain hut has been taken into use on Álftárvatn lake in the central highlands. The cabin is located on the immensely popular Laugavegur hiking trail and is owned by travel operator Holtungar.
According to Morgublaðið newspaper, the cabin is conveniently situated 23 kilometres (14 miles) from Landmannalaugar geothermal area and 33 kilometres (20.5 miles) from Þórsmörk (where the Laugavegur hike ends).
The route has seen a huge increase in mountaineers in the past years, an estimated 70% of the hikers are foreign.
