This year‘s nesting of the Arctic Stern seems to be going well in the Capital Area. According to a initial count of nests in the most important nesting grounds of the sterna in the Capital Region some 2,000 pairs of Arctic Stern have nested this year.

The count, performed bi-annually by the municipal authorities in Seltjarnarnes, a suburb of Reykjavík, located on the westernmost tip of the peninsula where Reykjavík stands (the peninsula is actually called Seltjarnarnes peninsula), shows that this year‘s nesting population to be close to the long term average. A similar number of birds nested in 2000, 2009 and 2013.

A record number nested in 2005, when 4,500 pairs were counted. Only 500 nests were counted in 2007 and not a single nest in 2011. However, it still remains to be seen how many chicks survive to adulthood.
