The Icelandic Meteorological Office had issued a Yellow Weather Alert for South and South-West Iceland yesterday. The Ring Road between Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Vík was closed. The road was re-opened yesterday evening. A volunteer for the Red Cross told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið most of the people who sought shelter in the emergency center were foreign travellers who had not realized how bad the weather was.

The emergency center was not equipped to house the 250 visitors overnight, as it had cots for some 50 people. However, a guesthouse near Vík which had closed down over the winter opened its doors to families traveling with children. Local businesses supplied the stranded travellers with coffee and cookies. A spokesman for the Red Cross told the local news site Vísir the owners of the guesthouse made a big difference by opening their doors. They are wonderful people.

According to the National Broadcasting Service many travellers who came to the emergency center were worried they might miss their flights from Keflavík Airport. Fortunately the storm had slowed down sufficiently by late evening to permit the re-opening of the Ring Road.

After the road was re-opened most of the stranded travellers continued their travel. Only those who felt uncomfortable driving in the storm in the middle of the night therefore spent the night in Vík.
