NASA granted the Icelandic Met Office use of a new and extremely accurate terrain model of Iceland. The generous gift will enable the IMO to estimate potential threats of avalanches and floods more accurately than ever before, reports the National Broadcasting Service.
With its limited budget the IMO would not have been able to produce such a detailed terrain model. A meteorologist at the IMO likens NASA’s gift to a winning lottery ticket. “This will increase our data gathering and provide valuable information useful to many,” said meteorologist Ragnar Heiðar Þorsteinsson.
