Thursday, the 24th of March 2016, marks the start of the annual Aldrei fór ég suður (translates to English as “Never Went South”) music festival. Taking place in the town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords, Aldrei is a two day long festival ending on the 26th of March. Whether this is your first time hearing about it or not, it isn't too late to plan your trip this year. The festival features talent from all over Iceland with a wide range of eclectic genres.
From Icelandic hip-hop with Ulfur Ulfur, to Indie Pop/trip-hop with Emiliana Torini, to punk rock from Strigaskor nr. 42, Aldrei fór ég suður has your musical needs covered. Aside from these acts, there are also eight other musicians performing, and each one is as unique as the last. Did we mention that entry is free?!

Aldrei fór ég suður is just one of the exciting events happening in Ísafjörður, so bring your kids, bring your grandparents, because this Easter break in the WestFjords is a holiday for all ages. The annual Skí Week winter festival is taking place from the 23rd to the 28th of March. Ski Week has been around since 1935, and it focuses on skiing (both downhill and cross country.) Activities include an adult ski race, an Easter egg hunt for the children, and more.
Here's what you need to know about Aldrei
This year, both festival nights are being held at The Warehouse (Kampa venue,) which is only a five minute walk from town. If you are a regular attendee of the festival, you know that in previous years it has been held in Grænigarður, which was a 15-20 minute walk to town. The first night at The Warehouse begins at 8 PM on Friday the 25th of March, and ends at 12 AM. The same schedule repeats for Saturday night, but before nightly concert, don't miss out on the live music performances happening at Swimming Pool Suðureyri from 2 PM till 4 PM.
Live music isn't exclusive to the festival, and you will find many low key live performance events happening at various bars and cafes about town from the 24th through the 27th. Some good places to stop by and check out for live music are: Húsið, Krúsin, Edinborgarhúsið, and Hótel Ísafjörður.
More references: Check out Cafe Bræðraborg for great coffee, and Tjöruhúsið for their famous seafood. If you are in the mood for something a little fancier, Hótel Ísafjörður is offering a three course set meal, however tables are reservation only- so take haste!
There are still a few hotels and guesthouses still available for booking in Ísafjörður, but space is becoming sparse. Your best bet is to look into the guesthouses/hotels/hostels in Bolungarvík, the next town over. During Easter time, extra buses will be running from Bolungarvik to Ísafjörður (about a 20 minute ride), so you will be able to go to and from the music festival. Additionally, Bolungarvík is a beautiful location, situated along the water with stunning views of the mountains.
