Murder on Golden Circle: Tragedy involving brothers, heavy drinking at small farm 7902

One man is in custody suspected of having killed a man at a farm in South Iceland over Easter weekend. The man who is being held is the brother of the victim. He has told police he doesn't remember anything that happened during the fateful night due to heavy drinking. 

A night of heavy drinking
On Saturday the Police in South Iceland was dispatched to the farm Gýgjarhóll II which is located just off the Golden Circle, between Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall. The farmer had woken up after a night of heavy drinking with his brother, a 66 year old carpenter who lives in Reykjavík, was dead. The victim's brother told police he had no idea what had happened overnight. According to police the crime scene showed that a violent confrontation had taken place, and that the victim had died after a violent physical assault. 

Two men were arrested at the scene, both brothers of the deceased. One of the two brothers was quickly released, but the second brother, who lives a the farm where the incidence took place, will remain in custody while the case is being investigated. 

Suspect called police

According to the National Broadcasting Service RÚV the victim, who lived in Reykjavík, had driven to the farm with the third brother, an older man who is partially paralyzed after suffering a stroke. The two men regularly go to visit their brother. The third brother went to bed early, while the victim and the suspect continued drinking into the night. According to RÚV he has been unable to shed any light on what happened during the tragic night.

The lawyer for the suspect told RÚV that his client woke up the next morning only to discover that his brother was dead. He says that his client called the police immediately and did not disturb anything at the scene. He has cooperated with the investigation from the first moment. 

This is the first murder of 2018 in Iceland. In 2017 four murders were reported.
