Sigríður Ingibjörg Ingadóttir, MP with the Social Democratic Alliance (Samfylkingin), asked Illugi Gunnarsson, the Minister of Education, whether he intended to act on behalf of the Icelandic Art Centre to have Iceland’s contribution to the Venice Biennale reopened.
Iceland’s contribution, an installation named The Mosque: First Mosque in the Historic City of Venice, was located in a former Catholic church and was closed by Venetian authorities on the 22nd of May. The reason? Local authorities maintained the installation was “not art” and considered it a security threat. They also claimed artist Christoph Büchel broke the law by the use of the venue for religious activities.
Sigríður Ingibjörg wants Illugi to pursue the matter and have the installation reopened to the public.
