Today's storm is the most severe weather to hit Iceland in almost 25 years. The last storm of comparable size ploughed over Iceland on 3 February 1991 leaving behind a considerable destruction but thankfully claimed no life.
Last winter Iceland was battered relentlessly with bad winter storms. In the period from November 1st to middle of March, 38 low-pressure areas hit Iceland with raging winds accompanied by massive snow or sleet and ensuing transportation disruptions.
Over this four months period rarely more than three days passed between the storms.
Today's blizzard is storm number four to pummel Iceland in less than a week. We might have a long winter ahead of us.
