All liquor stores in Iceland will be closed on Thursday and Friday due to a strike by the members of SFR, the Union of Public Servants. The retail distribution of alcoholic beverages in Iceland is handled by a state monopoly, ÁTVR, which operates 49 stores around Iceland. Most of the 350 employees of the stores are members of the union.

The union has announced it will strike on Thursdays and Fridays, as well as Mondays and Tuesdays, to emphasize its demands for higher wages. The strikes will continue until an agreement is reached. ÁTVR stores will therefore only be open on Saturdays and Wednesdays until the union and the state reach an agreement.

Sigrún Ósk Sigurðardóttir, vice president of ÁTVR, tells the local news site visir.is that the company is preparing for the strike and the expected rush on Wednesday and Saturday.
