The number of foreign travellers who flew from Iceland via Keflavík Airport in 2015 reached 1,261,938, which is 293,000 more than the year before, the local news site turisti.is reports. The increase is 30%, compared to an increase of 25% in 2014. In 2012 and 2012 the number of foreign travellers grew by 20%. These figures do not include travellers who came by cruise ships or through other airports.
The single largest group of foreign visitors in 2015 came from the US. The number of American travellers grew by 59% since 2014, thanks to greatly increased service between Keflavík and US airports. The number of Chinese travellers also increased, nearly doubling since 2014. At the same time the share of the Nordic continues to shrink. In 2015 only 13% of foreign visitors were from the other Nordic countries, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, compared to nearly 25% in 2010.
