More than 700 new hotel rooms being added outside Reykjavík 5877

The overwhelming majority of new hotel construction is taking place in Reykjavík and the capital region, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV reports. While the number of hotel rooms in Reykjavík is set to expand by nearly 50% in the next few years, the number of hotel rooms outside Reykjavík will increase by roughly 20%.

According to calculations by RÚV the number of new hotels outside Reykjavík will increase by roughly 700 in the next few years. Data from Statistics Iceland there were 3,756 hotel rooms outside Reykjavík in 2016, which means the increase is roughly 20%. In the capital region the number of hotel rooms will increase from roughly 5,000 to 7,000 in the same time period, an increase of 50%.

Most of the new hotel construction outside Reykjavík is taking place in North Iceland, where 270 new hotel rooms are being added in two large new hotels in the town of Akureyri. Two large new hotels are also being built on the Reykjanes peninsula in South West Iceland, a 60 room hotel by the Blue Lagoon and a 50 room hotel at the Keflavík Airport. Two large hotels are also being constructed in West Iceland, a 60 room rural hotel in Varmaland and a 83 room hotel in the town of Borgarfjörður, which is on hold.

Other new hotels outside Reykjavík are all smaller than 50 rooms. No new hotels are being planned in the Westfjords in West Iceland.
