More than 500 members of the Association of Academics (BHM), an umbrella organisation representing workers with particular qualifications or professions, began a series of strikes today to push for higher pay.
The strike will greatly impact work at Landspítali hospital in Reykjavík and other health institutes around the country, however hospital management has ensured that patients have uninterrupted emergency services during that time.

According to the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, representatives for BHM and authorities did not meet up for negotiations talks this weekend and BHM’s director, Páll Halldórsson, has criticised the government for attempting to have the strike deemed illegal in court rather than continuing wage negotiations.
Midwifes working in Landspítalinn’s maternity ward have planned work stoppages every Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until agreements have been reached, starting today. Natural scientists, radiologists, and technologists plan to strike tomorrow.
