More than 300 earthquakes detected in the Bárðarbunga area since Friday 1865

The eruption in Holuhraun continues with similar intensity. The eruption began on August 29th.

According to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) around 100 earthquakes were detected in the Bárðarbunga area in the past 24 hours, the largest being M4.6.

Since Friday over 300 earthquakes have been detected in the huge volcano, located under the ice cap of Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland's central higlands. Two earthquakes were bigger then M5.0. An M5.2 earthquake struck at 21.32 (9.32 pm) on October 31st and an M5.3 hit at 16.02 (4.02pm) on November 2nd. 

New lava produced by the Holuhraun eruption covers an area of around 67 square kilometers (25.87 square miles) in the central highlands. That is more than the size of Manhattan (59.5 sq. km/22.96 sq. mi).
