In response to growing concern that it is only a question of time before a serious accident takes place at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon Vatnajökull National Park will hire more park rangers which will be posted at glacial lagoons in the park. New warning signs will also be posted in an effort to keep visitors from walking on the ice.

The new guards will be posted at Jökulsárlón, Fjallsárlón and Svínafellslón lagoons. The park has posted guards at the lagoons, but has been unable to maintain a permanent presence at all of the lagoons.
In winter ice piles up on the lagoons permitting visitors to venture out onto the lagoon, walking from one float to another, even climbing onto icebergs. This is extremely dangerous, as the ice is not stable. Venturing out onto the ice at Jökulsárlón is particularly dangerous, as the lagoon experiences tidal effects.
At Jökulsárlón the ice has a tendency to pile up at a beach close to the parking lot by the lagoon. Guides at the site worry that despite verbal warnings and prominent warning signs, large numbers of visitors venture out onto the ice every day in the winter.

Two Park Rangers are stationed at the lagoon, but the two rangers are responsible for a huge area, and cannot maintain a permanent presence at the beach. The national park now intends to add two more guards at the lagoon, as well as erecting new warning signs. The new warning signs are the result of a collaboration with ICE-SAR and Safetravel.is.
