The new guards will be posted at Jökulsárlón, Fjallsárlón and Svínafellslón lagoons. The park has posted guards at the lagoons, but has been unable to maintain a permanent presence at all of the lagoons.
In winter ice piles up on the lagoons permitting visitors to venture out onto the lagoon, walking from one float to another, even climbing onto icebergs. Two Park Rangers are stationed at the lagoon, but the two rangers are responsible for a huge area, and cannot maintain a permanent presence at the beach. The national park now intends to add two more guards at the lagoon, as well as erecting new warning signs. The new warning signs are the result of a collaboration with ICE-SAR and Safetravel.is.
