If you have always dreamt about staying in a lighthouse at the edge of the world you might soon be able to make those dreams come true: The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration is looking into renting out some of its lighthouses to travellers who want a taste of solitude and the ocean!

One of most expensive accommodation in Iceland
The idea of renting out lighthouses to travellers is at least partially inspired by the experience of renting out the lighthouse by Dyrhólaey, near the village of Vík in South Iceland. The Icelandair Hotel Vík rented the lighthouse, using it to offer accommodation to foreign journalists who were invited to Iceland in 2015 as part of a marketing campaign.

The lighthouse is in fact a newly renovated and fully furnished apartment with kitchen, dining room, sitting room, bathroom and three bedrooms on four floors. The accommodation sleeps up to five guests and comes with a full continental self-service breakfast included.

During the months of September and October 2016 the general public can book the lighthouse. Staying at the Dyrhólaey lighthouse is not cheap, however. According to reports the night costs a cool 165.000 ISK (1.330 USD/1.200 EUR ISK making it one of the most expensive accommodation in Iceland.  But, if you have that kind of money, just burning a hole in your pocket, there are many other expensive things to do, but few as unique. More information and pictures from the lighthouse can be found here.

Several lighthouses already being rented out
Several lighthouses are currently being rented out or used for other purposes than providing navigational assistance to seafarers.
