Mixed martial arts fighter, Gunnar Nelson, is caught in a neighbour dispute over a tree. The fighter has been reported to the police for cutting down a neighbour’s tree without their permission.

Haraldur Dean Nelson, Gunnar’s father and manager, told Fréttablaðið newspaper that the roots of the neighbour’s tree had spread into Gunnar’s property, causing severe damage to sewer pipes. Gunnar had contacted the neighbours offering to remove the tree and to foot the bill himself.

“The neighbours said they would contact Gunnar if they didn’t want the tree removed. Months have passed without word and Gunnar assumed he could go ahead and remove it. This is just an unfortunate misunderstanding,” Haraldur explained.

According to one of the neighbours, Richard Kristinsson, the tree in question was a mature tree and most likely there was a preservation order on it. Neither neighbour had wanted the tree removed as it provided shelter from driving southeasterly winds.

“We came home one day and the tree was gone. They had no right to remove it. This is criminal,” Richard said.

Gunnar is the first and only Icelandic MMA fighter to sign a multi-fight contract with the UFC where he competes in the welterweight division. He has trained with featherweight champion 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor for years.
