Rescue workers retrieved a body from Bleiksárgljúfur canyon yesterday evening. The body is yet to be identified but is believed to be that of Ásta Stefánsdóttir, who has been missing since June 10th.

Ásta and her partner, Spanish-born Pino Becerra Bolanos, had been staying in a summer cottage in Fljótshlíð, South Iceland, when they went missing. The alarm was raised by Ásta’s family after the two women failed to return from their trip.

The women’s clothes were later found near the Bleiksárgljúfur canyon and the body of Becerra Bolanos was found in the canyon soon after. It is thought that the two women has intended to swim in the ravine.

Rescue workers spent hundreds of hours searching Bleiksárgljúfur area in the hope of finding Ásta. The search had proven unsuccessful until now. A post-mortem examination will be held to establish the cause of death which is not being treated as suspicious.
