Missing girl: Members of the Police Special Forces on their way to Greenlandic trawler 5897

Members of the Police Special Forces were seen boarding the Coast Guard helicopter TF-LÍF at noon today. The helicopter then flew out to sea. According to the sources of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV the helicopter is headed out to the Greenlandic trawler Polar Nanoq.

The Police Superintendent in charge of the investigation did not confirm that a police operation involving the trawler was underway. He told RÚV that it was impossible to say whether someone would be arrested in connection to the case later today. The trawler is expected to arrive in harbour at 23:00 tonight (11 PM).

Yesterday Icelandic Police requested assistance from the Danish coast guard to contact the trawler, as one or more crew members are believed to have vital information about the 20 year old woman, Birna Brjánsdóttir, who has been missing since Saturday morning. The trawler was harboured in Hafnafjörður harbour at the time of Birna's disappearance.

Disturbing connections
Crew members had rented a red Kia Rio which police believes is connected to Birna's disappearance. On Monday her shoes were found a short distance from where the trawler was harboured. According to the local newspaper Fréttablaðið the crew of the trawler decided to turn the ship around and sail back to Iceland. According to the local newspaper Morgunblaðið Icelandic police officers were flown by helicopter to the Danish coast guard vessel Triton which will is sailing to intercept the Greenlandic trawler.

The case has gripped the Icelandic nation. In an interview with the local news site Vísir Grímur Grímsson, Chief Superintendent at the Metropolitan Police, who is in charge of the case, urged people to show calm and warned against hysteria.
