The Chinese ambassador in Iceland and his wife are reported to have been arrested for espionage earlier this year. Two weeks ago the Icelandic newspaper DV revealed that Ma Jisheng had been missing for more than seven months.
Ma left Iceland in January and was set to return in March. A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Urður Gunnarsdóttir, explained that when the ministry enquired about Ma’s whereabouts, the Chinese embassy in Reykjavík told them that the ambassador would not be returning to his post.
Reuters reports that Ma was suspected of having become a Japanese spy while working in the Chinese embassy in Tokyo between 2004 and 2008.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry claims to have no information on the ambassador’s location.
Ma served as the Chinese ambassador in Iceland between 2012 and until his disappearance in January of this year.
