According to DV newspaper, the Minister of Interior, Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, tried to influence police investigations on leaked information from her ministry, prompting Stefán Eiríksson, former chief of police in Reykjavík, to resign. Hanna Birna has denied the accusations.
In November 2013 a member of staff of the Ministry of the Interior leaked a memo to the press which contained a number of false allegations about Tony Omos, an asylum seeker who was facing deportation, and was deported in December.

As reported by DV, Hanna Birna repeatedly tried to influence police investigations and threatened Stefán should he not comply. This led the chief of police to resign and take up a new job as head of the Social Welfare Department in Reykjavík.
According to DV’s sources, Stefán informed Sigríður Friðjónsdóttir, state prosecutor, about his concerns regarding the matter. Stefán has yet to deny the reports and claims to simply have applied for a new job and been appointed the position.
