Mezzoforte turns 40 years old: The first Icelandic band to make it big on world stage 4651

The band which blazed the trail for Björk and Sigurrós, the Icelandic instrumental jazz-funk outfit, celebrated its 40 year anniversary over the weekend. The band is best known for its hit single Garden Party which came out in 1983. Garden Party peaked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. 

Mezzoforte was the first Icelandic band to make it big on the international stage, thus paving the road for a number of other Icelandic artists, including the punk rock band the Sugarcubes. In 1987, four years after Mezzoforte's success the Sugarcubes released their second album, Life's Too Good, in the UK. The album won immediate acclaim, peaking at 14 on the UK charts. The singer of the Sugarcubes was Björk Guðmundsdóttir, who later went on to pursue a successful solo career.
