Strætó, the Metropolitan public transit system, has announced it will be extending its service hours to offer late night buses to help getting night-owls back home from a night on the town. Beginning next January the busiest bus lines will run until one after midnight on weekdays, and until 4:00-4:30 in the morning on weekends.
According to a press release from Strætó the late night buses will only take passengers out of downtown Reykjavík into the suburbs, not the other way around.
Reykjavík residents and advocates for public transport have long called for the extended service hours, arguing people who come to downtown to visit bars or restaurants should have the option of taking public transport back home. Such services are also crucial for employees in the service industries who work late hours. Many have also argued that a better bus service would increase the safety of girls and women, offering a safer way to get back home after a night on the town.
