Metropolitan Police called to herd a band of runaway horses off highway in Reykjavík suburb 6889

The Metropolitan Police recently received a rather unusual call: A concerned citizen had noticed a large band of horses who seemed to have escaped from an enclosure to wander around the Reykjavík suburb of Breiðholt. When Police arrived at the scene the band of horses was slowly making its way to the west along Breiðholtsbraut highway, in the middle of a bridge over Reykjanesbraut highway, the main highway between Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport.

According to a Facebook post by the Metropolitan Police the call came early morning, which explains why the roving band of horses did not cause any serious traffic accidents: Had the horses chosen rush hour for their stroll they would likely have caused a major hazard, as the bridge where they were ultimately caught is one of the busiest intersections in Reykjavík

The officers quickly blocked traffic on the street, and proceeded to herd the horses off the road:

The herding required considerable ingenuity and patience. The officers put the crime scene ribbon to good use when they erected a temporary fenced pasture on a traffic island for the horses. The horses proved to be very cooperative, respecting the officers' instructions. They were later taken back to where they belonged, bringing their adventures to an end.
