Mental disorders the leading cause of disability 579

Mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in Iceland according to Tryggingastofnun – The Social Insurance Administration's annual report. Tryggingastofnun is a governmental service institution seeing to the payment of pension insurance and social assistance.

More than 17 thousand Icelanders were declared 75% disable. The number of individuals receiving benefits from The Social Insurance Administration has risen 83% from 2010 to 2013.

According to the annual report of the institute 35% of disabled people have some form of mental disorder; after mental disorders, musculoskeletal diseases and neurological diseases are leading causes of disability.

Since 2005, the costs due to disability schemes and agreements have risen steadily in comparison to average household expenditure. This is an increase of 117% and the expenditure last year reached 528 million ISK (4.6 million USD/3.4 million EUR).
