Members of search and rescue units patrol the central highlands in July and August 1104

Members of search and rescue units have begun patrolling the central highlands, reports Morgunblaðið newspaper. Mountain roads in the area were opened to summer traffic a week ago.

Seasoned searchers from Landsbjörg, the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, patrol the area in July and August and assist and inform travellers when needed.

Searchers are located in three spots in the highlands: Drekagil canyon near Askja, Nýjidalur on Sprengisandur road, and Landmannalaugar.
