The founder of the Muslim Association of Iceland, Salman Tamimi, has pressed charges against commentators that threatened to kill him in Facebook comments linked to a news story on Vísir.is
The story focused on the proposed building of a Mosque, an issue that was debated before the municipal elections last weekend.
Sveinbjörg Birna Sveinbjörnsdóttir, the Progressive Party´s leader in the capital, stated that the construction of Iceland‘s first Mosque should be withdrawn and re-voted on in a public referendum.
Following her remarks, support for the Progressive Party in Reykjavik increased, helping the party capture two council seats of fifteen in the municipal elections.
Salman criticized the tactics of the Progressive party stating, “…They just wanted to get votes and it didn’t matter how they got them.” Tamimi’s lawyer also had strong words for the Progressive Party, explaining that it is important to, “take a stand” against the hateful words that the Progressive Party has directed towards the religious group.
Construction of the Mosque was approved unanimously last year by the Reykjavik City Council.
