Member of parliament bares breast in support of #Free the nipple campaign 2622

Björt Ólafsdóttir, a member of parliament for the Bright Future Party, has joined the growing number of Icelandic women who have ‘freed the nipple’ on Twitter. The parliamentarian published a photo of her breast under the caption: “This is for feeding babies. Shove that up your patriarchy.”

A large number of women, and men, have shown support for the campaign ‘Free the Nipple’ by publishing photos of their bare chests on Twitter.

Free the nipple is an equality movement focused upon the double standards regarding the censorship of female breasts and society’s tendency to sexualise the female body. The campaign suddenly went viral in Iceland on Tuesday evening after a high school stu­dent was mocked by a young man for hav­ing posted a pic­ture on Twitter that showed her nip­ple.

Uni­ver­sity and high school stu­dents intend to free their nip­ples today by going braless. According to Bóel Sigríður Guðbrandsdóttir, head of the Feminist Association of the Commercial College of Iceland, the campaign does not advocate for women to bare their chests at any given time, but rather seeks to support gender equality.

“Bare female breasts are still such a taboo in society. We just want to celebrate the female body,” she told Vísir
