Dagur B. Eggertsson, the mayor of Reykjavík, met with two members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police during the opening ceremony of the annual Winter Lights Festival, which kicks off today, Thursday.

The reason the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was present is that Edmonton, Canada, is the festival’s guest city this year. Artists from Edmonton will partake in this year’s festival and Reykjavík City Hall will host a poetry night dedicated to Edmonton’s honorary poet Mary Pinkoski, among other events.
Over 200 events will take place all over the greater capital area this weekend in connection with the festival. All events are free.
