The mayor of the town of Grindavík on the Reykjanes peninsula has apologized publicly for listing a room in the mayor‘s official residence on Airbnb. The mayor had not asked the municipality, which owns the mayor‘s residence, for permission to rent out a room to travellers.
Earlier this month the local newspaper Stundin broke the news that the mayor of Grindavík had listed a room in the mayor‘s residence on Airbnb. The mayor rented one room in the residence, which is a 145 m2 (1560 sqf) private home for 57 EUR a night. He told media he had been “curious” as to how Airbnb worked, and that since he lived alone he had enjoyed the company of the visitors.
Locals were surprised, as were members of the town council who refused to comment on the issue. After the story became public the mayor removed the listing from Airbnb. The mayor has now formally apologized for having rented out the mayor‘s residence without the permission or knowledge of the municipality.
