The severe low-pressure system passing over the east and north caused rack and ruin in the village of Eskifjörður, east Iceland, this morning. Gusts of 33 metres per second (74 mph/119 km per hour) tore roofs off three houses, damaged the village‘s dock and caused severe flooding in some parts of the town.

According to the National Broadcasting Service (RÚV), small oceanfront buildings were damaged as they got battered by huge waves.  Sævar Guðjónsson from Mjóeyri told RÚV‘s reporter that his cellar was flooded with seawater and a hundred-year-old doc had partially been washed to sea during the storm.

The low-pressure system is now crossing over to northern regions and will begin to decrease by late afternoon. A wet start to the day, with further heavy sleet or snow in most places. Drier conditions in the north and northeast. Temperatures ranging between 0 to 5 degrees Celsius (32-41 Fahrenheit).

New Year‘s Eve (31 December): A brisk south or southeasterly breeze in most parts of the country. It will be a cloudy day with occasional snow showers in the south and southwest. Maximum temperatures around 6 degrees Celsius (43 Fahrenheit) in the south.

New Year‘s Day (1 January): Another cloudy day with spells of snow or sleet in the south, southeast and west. Maximum temperatures around 3 degrees Celsius (37 Fahrenheit) in the south.
