Massive search underway for man who fell in Gullfoss waterfall 6777

All available Police and ICE-SAR units in South Iceland, as well as two Coast Guard helicopters have been dispatched to Gullfoss waterfall after a man fell into the waterfall earlier this evening. Ambulances have also been dispatched to the area, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV reports.

Björgunarfélag Árborgar, the local ICE-SAR chapter was notified at 16:50 about the accident, which had taken place shortly before. The man was last seen walking on cliffs in the waterfall shortly before he fell in. He has not been seen after disappearing from sight. A spokeswoman for the chapter told RÚV that the area where man appears to have fallen is extremely difficult, with tall steep cliffs and the thundering waterfall: The cliffs are very steep there, and if he fell into the waterfall, he will be very difficult to see. He will disappear very quickly if he fell in.

The Icelandic Coast Guard dispatched one of its helicopters immediately upon receiving the distress call at shortly before five in the afternoon. The helicopter was airborne at 17:13, and had arrived at the scene of the accident twenty minutes later. A second helicopter was sent to the site at 17:37, carrying specialized Search and Rescue units from Reykjavík.
