The strong gale that is currently battering the west coast will begin to subside at around noon. The storm reached its peak at around 6 am this morning, measuring the strongest on Fróðárheiði heath where blasts of wind reached a speed of 35 metres per second (78 mph/ 126 km/h).
The storm surge caused some damage to property in the Reykjanes peninsula, and a storm related power-outage occurred in Snæfellsnes, West Iceland.

Travel conditions:
A number of roads in West Iceland are currently impassable due to bad weather, including the roads across Fróðárheiði, Brattabrekka, Þröskuldar, Steingrímsfjarðarheiði, Kleifarheiði, Hálfdán, Klettsháls and Hjallaháls. According to information from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration the severe blasts of wind have ripped apart asphalt on some roads. Motorists are advised to show great caution when driving today.
Mudslides went across the Hvalnesskriður and Þvottárskriður roads yesterday. Both roads remain closed to traffic while workers clear debris from the roads.
Herjólfur has cancelled one of its ferry services to the Westman Islands due to weather.
