Man who drowned on Reynisfjara beach was a foreign traveller who was visiting Iceland with his wife 3458

According to an announcement by the Police in South Iceland the man who drowned on Reynisfjara beach this morning was a foreign traveller. First responders are still at the scene. Police in South Iceland have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

The man, whose identity or nationality have not been released, was travelling in Iceland with his wife. According to police the man lost his footing at the water’s edge, and was pulled to sea with the receding wave.

The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that Police received an emergency call at 10:30 AM. Rescue units and first responders were immediately dispatched, including a Coast Guard helicopter which took off at 10:39 AM. Shortly thereafter the helicopter was turned around as the man had been found dead.

This is the second drowning on Reynisfjara in less than a decade. In 2007 an American woman drowned when she was similarly swept to the sea by an incoming wave. Foreign travellers have narrowly escaped being swept to sea after being knocked down in several different incidents since the beginning of this year.
