Cause of accident unclear
On Wednesday evening the three people were driving on the Ring Road just east of Vík, when the driver of the vehicle lost control of the car, causing the car to roll over several times before landing on the side of the road. The cause of the accident is still unclear. The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle where the road crosses Kötlugarður, a several meter high flood barrier constructed to protect Vík from a glacial outburst flood from Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Judging by the severity of the accident it appears the vehicle was traveling at a significant speed.

According to the Police in South Iceland all three people were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the car, a male, was pronounced dead at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík. His travel companions, both Singaporean nationals born in 1994, were taken to the hospital by ambulance. They did not suffer critical injuries in the accident.
