The majority of Icelanders support making the central highlands into a national park, according to a new survey by Gallup for Icelandic Environment Association and the Iceland Nature Conservation Association.

The survey shows that 61.4 percent of Icelanders support the idea, a 5 percen increase from 2011.
According to Mbl.is support was measured across the political spectrum, with 51 percent of those who support the current right-wing coalition government in favour of the idea, while 72 percent of those who do not support the government want to see the central highlands made into a national park.
