The Akureyri merger would bring about major consolidation of the whale watching industry, as Akureyri Whale Watching is part of Elding, one of the largest whale watching companies in Reykjavík. Rannveig Grétarsdóttir, the owner and CEO of Elding told RÚV that the company hopes that a merger would bring about better utilization of the capital investments of Elding.
The whale watching season is not long enough to justify many competing firms in Akureyri. A merger will allow us to use the boats better and more efficiently.
Currently Akureyri Whale Watching serves just 5,000 customers over the winter. The hope is to bring this figure to 20-30,000.
