The two major whale watching firms in Akureyri are negotiating a merger. The National Broadcasting Service RÚV reports that the two companies, Akureyri Whale Watching and Ambassador Whale Watching will merge. The owner of Akureyri Whale Watching told RÚV that there simply isn't enough demand during winter to justify two separate operators.

One of the Capitals of Whale Watching in Iceland
Eyjafjörður fjord is one of the best destinations for whale watching in Iceland. Akureyri is the center for whale watching in Eyjafjörður, which is one of the best destinations for whale watching in Iceland. The other major destinations for whale watching are Reykjavík, Húsavík in North Iceland as well as Hólmavík and Ísafjörður in the Westfjords.

The Akureyri merger would bring about major consolidation of the whale watching industry, as Akureyri Whale Watching is part of Elding, one of the largest whale watching companies in Reykjavík. Rannveig Grétarsdóttir, the owner and CEO of Elding told RÚV that the company hopes that a merger would bring about better utilization of the capital investments of Elding.

The whale watching season is not long enough to justify many competing firms in Akureyri. A merger will allow us to use the boats better and more efficiently.

Currently Akureyri Whale Watching serves just 5,000 customers over the winter. The hope is to bring this figure to 20-30,000.
