The main road through Þingvellir National Park, Þingvallavegur (road 36) has been re-opened to traffic. The road has been closed Since August 1 for repairs and maintenance made necessary by the dramatic increase in traffic due to tourism and growth in the number of tour buses on the Golden Circle.

The narrow Þingvallavegur road winds through the picturesque lava field and birch forest of Þingvellir National Park. The IRCA made every effort to minimize damage or disruption to the forest and natural formations along the road, which has slowed down the repairs. The IRCA managed to complete repairs to a 3 km (1.9 mi) stretch of the road this year, and expects to complete the remaining 6 km (3.7 mi) in the summer of 2019.

While Þingvallavegur was closed all traffic through the National Park was re-routed to the even narrower Vallarvegur (road 361), a scenic road which runs along the shore of Þingvallavatn lake. Vallarvegur has now been closed for winter, and will only re-open next spring.
