The speed limit on single-lane bridges on the Ring Road and busy single-lane bridges outside the Ring Road will be lowered to 50 km/h (31 mph) to increase the safety of motorists. The decision comes after a deadly accident on a single-lane bridge on the Ring Road in South Iceland during Christmas.

Several serious accidents, including fatal accidents, have taken place on single-lane bridges in recent years. Speeding has been a factor in the most serious accidents. Unfamiliarity of foreign travelers with Icelandic conditions and single lane bridges have also been named as factors. Many drivers fail to show caution and look out for the safety of other motorists when approaching single-lane bridges, barreling over the bridge at unsafe speeds. Lowering the speed limit will hopefully help alert drivers to potential danger and force them to show greater auction.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority will impose the 50 km/h speed limit at all bridges that are used by more than 300 vehicles daily. 75 bridges around Iceland fulfill this criteria, half of them on the Ring Road. Single lane bridges on the Ring Road in South East Iceland will be prioritized.

New warning signs in English will also be installed at the single lane bridges in South Iceland.
