A tourist who had lost his way on Mt. Esja yesterday, Sunday, was found yesterday evening by members of a local rescue unit, reports RÚV.is.
The holidaymaker called the national emergency number, 112, at around 7 pm but was unable to inform rescue units of his location. 120 rescue unit members partook in the search. Conditions on the mountain were difficult and the first teams to arrive on Esja were caught in an avalanche. No one was injured in the avalanche but increased safety precautions were taken after that and a specialized avalanche search unit was called out.
The man was found at around 9.30 pm in Blikadalur valley. He was cold, but otherwise unharmed.
