Locals in Breiðdalsvík raised enough money to repair swimming pool when the municipality couldn't 2841

Residents of the small fishing village Breiðdalsvík in East Iceland, managed to muster up enough money to repair the town’s swimming pool which had been closed to the public for two years, reports the National Broadcasting Service.

The swimming pool was in dire need of some repairs but the municipality could not afford them and was forced closed the pool down. For the past couple of years, local children have therefore had to travel to the neighbouring town of Stöðvarfjörður for swimming lessons.

That‘s when the local women‘s association, Hlíf, stepped in and decided to start a fundraiser to raise money for the repairs. The local Lions club and sports team also lent a helping hand and this past weekend they had raised enough money to improve the pool.

“Sometimes it only takes a little nudge to get things into motion. We now happily await summer’s arrival,” said Sif Hauksdóttir, Breiðdalshreppur district’s project manager.
