According to Fréttablaðið newspaper, there has been a steady decline in hash sales since the economic crash in 2008. At the same time there has been a rise in sales of locally grown marijuana.

Örvar Geir Geirsson, a member of RVK Homegrown, a marijuana legalization advocacy group, maintains there has been little demand for hash over the past couple of years due to a price increase.

“People have begun to grow marijuana locally. It’s been nearly impossible to import hash because of the currency restrictions, instead dealers spent their money on equipment and are now producing locally grown marijuana,” he explains.

According to Fréttablaðið people are increasingly growing marijuana for private use.
