Local woman who attacked and robbed a foreign traveller in Reykjavík to remain in custody 6794

A local woman who is accused of attacking and robbing a foreign traveller on the outskirts of downtown Reykjavík on Friday will remain in custody for four weeks, or until September 22. The woman is a repeat offender who has been sentenced previously for various crimes, including several assaults. She was serving probation for a second assault when she was arrested following the incidence on Friday.

Physical attacks and robberies in broad daylight are extremely rare in Iceland.

Attempted robbery gone wrong
According to the Metropolitan Police the incidence took place on Friday noon on Eskihlíð street east of downtown Reykjavík. The young woman attacked a foreign traveller with a knife, threatening him and pulling his hair. The woman, who was armed with a knife, cut the traveller on his hand and in his face, before a local man who witnessed the attack managed to subdue the woman, holding her down until police arrived.

The woman had been attempting to rob the traveller's phone when she attacked him.

The court ruled that public safety was best served by keeping the woman in custody until her court appearance. The attack had been extremely violent and a violation of her parole.
