Plans to construct a beer spa and restaurant in Árskógssandur village, North Iceland, will be put into motion today. The Kaldi Brewery will host a sod-turning ceremony at 13 (1 pm) to celebrate the first day of the construction of the new spa, which is modelled after the popular Czech beer baths. Kaldi is the largest small brewery in Iceland, and produces some of Iceland's most popular beers.

“Beer has many health benefits. We’ll mix beer with clean seawater to create a little spa-paradise,” says owner Agnes Sigurðardóttir.

The spa and restaurant will be located inside a 400 square metre (4306 square feet) lodge by the ocean front of Eyjafjörður fjord.

“The brewery receives many visitors annually, but additional activities are still much needed,” Agnes explains. If everything goes according to plan the new spa will welcome its first guests next spring.

Kaldi is located in the small village Árskógssandur, around 25 minutes drive (33 km/20.5 mi) from town Akureyri, which is the largest town of North Iceland. The distance from Reykjavík to Árskógssandur is 395 km (345 mi).
