Kindergarten teachers are currently trying to reach an agreement in an on-going wage dispute with the Icelandic state. If an agreement has not been reached by June 19th, all state-run kindergartens will be closed.
Of the 517 kindergartens that were contacted, 480 of them plan on closing down on June 19th if an agreement has not been reached. That’s 93% of all kindergartens in the country.
According to visir.is, the 7% of kindergartens that intend to stay open are small kindergartens in the countryside or kindergartens where the manager is not a member of the Union of Kindergarten Teachers. In those few instances where the kindergartens are staying open, the services will be limited.
The negotiation committees met on Tuesday but did not come close to reaching an agreement. Kindergarten teachers require the same wage increase as elementary- and high school teachers got, or nearly a 30% wage increase.
