Life threatening gas emissions in the Skaftá glacial outburst flood 3548

The outburst flood (jökulhlaup) from the Skáftárketill calderas in Vatnajökull glacier has been tearing down towards the coast with growing force today. Alert Phase has been declared by the Civil Protection.

Travellers are warned from going near the river. Extreme caution should be shown in the are close to where the water is exploding from the glacier as dangerous volcanic gases are also being released. The gas emissions close to the river can be life threatening.

According to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) the gases, i.e. sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are moving downwind from Skaftá river towards the eastern part of Iceland.
