Renown photographer Janette Beckman is opening an exhibition in Reykjavík in connection to the forthcoming Iceland Airwaves music festival.
After photographing all the main heroes of London's punk and new wave rockers in the late seventies and early eighties, Beckman travelled to New York and never returned. When she landed on Manhattan in 1982 a new form of music movement was beginning to take shape, though still very much outside the limelights of the big city. The artists were no less rebellious and fierce than the punk rockers young Janette had documented for the English music magazine the Melody Maker. Hip-hop was just about to explode to the world having been part of the underground scene in NY for a while.
Beckman is bringing photos from those early days to the exhibition at Gallerí Fold in downtown Reykjavík, including portraits of Joe Strummer, The Police, Siouxsie and the Banshees, LL Cool J, NWA and Run DMC to name just a few.
As always Beckman is also packing her cameras, she told Iceland Insider in a short telephone interview, and is planning to photograph several Icelandic bands and musicians.
Travelling with Beckman is the legendary visual artist Cey Adams, who will contribute to the exhibition. Adams was the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings and is known for his work with Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and Mary J. Blige.
